The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to play for either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.

He has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team pursue trophies to come.

After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the success at Manchester.
