Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a cave that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.
In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.
Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the stage play The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.
The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the mine shaft is that employee.

Based on what is understood of his research, the case would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, causing the awakening of his powers—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects under Brenner's care.
A second theory, the box could have held dark matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy ended up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later as a different person. From then on, he battles the control of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in an earlier season.
Confronting Terror
His lasting fear linked to that memory demonstrates how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to fortify himself.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the endgame conflict that awaits.
