What Do We Know Up to Now?
The Incident
On Thursday morning, at 9:31 AM, an eyewitness alerted the police, claiming they had observed “a vehicle heading for members of the public, and a man was stabbed” near Heaton Park Shul, a synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester, where people had gathered to celebrate Yom Kippur, the highest holy day in the Jewish faith.
By 9.37am, a critical event had been announced by police and labeled a specific operational code, the designation indicating “marauding terrorist attacks”.
At 9.38am, the suspect, thought to be the attacker, was shot by armed police. Ambulance crews got to the site at 9.41am, where multiple victims were reportedly treated for injuries suffered from knife injuries and the automobile involved. A bomb disposal team arrived later.
At 11.15am, it was confirmed that two of the injured people had succumbed to their injuries, as had the attacker, who was fatally wounded.
By 3:00 PM, the national counter-terrorism lead designated the attack an act of terrorism and revealed that a pair of suspects had been carried out in regarding the incident.
Location of the Attack?
The attack took place outside the gates of Heaton Park Shul, a specific house of worship founded in 1967 on a local roadway in Higher Crumpsall. The neighborhood, along with nearby regions, has a substantial Jewish communities in northern England. The synagogue was expected to be crowded due to it falling on this sacred occasion. Like many synagogues in Britain, it had safety personnel consisting of skilled community members.
Who Is the Suspect?
A picture of the suspect, snapped moments earlier, has circulated in the media. However, up to now, limited information of him have surfaced. While addressing the public, the lead investigator said that the authorities believed they had identified the perpetrator but due to “ongoing risks in the area” they were could not verify at this stage.
Understanding Yom Kippur?
The Day of Atonement is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. The term means “day for repentance” and often entails members of the Jewish community fasting to “reflect deeply” and deepen their faith. Being the most important occasion, it is participated in by a vast number of Jewish individuals, as well as people who may not frequently observe the religion.
Public and Official Responses?
The Prime Minister commented he was “horrified by the incident” and the fact that it took place on Yom Kippur “intensifies the outrage”. He returned to the UK after being abroad, where he was set to meet with international counterparts.
