The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Selection in England's Ashes Team
The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.
The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch suit four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man squad, showing there are no doubts about either fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with Carse most likely to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted several previous Tests.
During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers remains the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to provide some spin while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
