The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 lives perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
