Similar to the recent storm swept through the northwest the night before, the home side blew the visitors away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a emphatic three goal win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their title credentials as they reinforced their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Losses for United

This scoreline signalled successive league setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them seven points off the table toppers with their title hopes in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' capability to manage domestic and European football with a thin team has been a hotly discussed issue since they secured entry to the UCL. Reviewing the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they looked tired throughout, the historic win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a a few alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added energy, although the omission of the in-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

City, in contrast, have no such workload concerns. Jeglertz made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The trouble started to gather for Skinner and his squad from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose dynamic attack manipulated and dismantled the opposition with a superb initial 45 minutes display that saw them net a trio in just over twenty minutes.

They increased their lead with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Rose was allowed to drive through the middle from the back, the play opened up for the hosts. The key Casparij picked the ball up on the right before sending a pinpoint driven ball for Shaw to bundle home. A short time later, they had a third after a rapid turnover in the ball saw Hemp afforded the space to strike a shot home from range.

After the Break

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to alter the outcome of the game. Former Manchester City player Jess Park came most likely to score, striking the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to record a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, on the other hand, could have increased their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the hosts. After failing to beat any opponent who placed above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against Arsenal and United to place them in a commanding position after nine games.
