Spurs Boss Thomas Frank Calls Vicario Critics 'Not Real Fans'
The Cottagers Begin Powerfully to Beat Tottenham and Increase Tension on Frank
Tottenham Hotspur supporters who booed goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario were told afterwards "they cannot be real Spurs fans" by manager Thomas Frank.
Spurs let in a pair of goals in the opening six minutes to fall 2-1 to Fulham, registering their 10th top-flight at home loss of the year.
But the main talking point was Fulham's next score when Vicario gave away the ball far beyond his area.
The goalkeeper ventured out to handle a high pass and carried the ball near the sideline.
But, rather than kicking it out of play, the Italy international turned and attempted to clear, but lost his footing as the ball glanced off Wilson and was collected by Josh King.
The forward laid the ball off to Welsh midfield player Wilson, who curled a shot into the goal from the sideline recorded at thirty-six point six yards.
Moments afterwards when the ball went to the keeper again, some Spurs supporters jeered him.
The team were jeered off at half-time, with the side 2-0 down, and again at the final whistle.
A particular of those jeering sessions really irritated the manager.
"It came to my attention a few of our supporters reportedly booed the situation and jeered after, which, in my view is completely unjustifiable," the Dane commented about the supporters' reaction to his shot-stopper.
"[They] cannot be true Tottenham supporters that act that way. Fair enough booing after the match, fine, but when we are playing, we are backing one another, we are behind one another going forward."
Kenny Tete had handed Fulham a early advantage prior to Wilson's strike β with Mohammed Kudus scoring for Tottenham in an better second period showing.
Ex- top-flight keeper Hart stated that the second goal was "totally preventable".
"I do appreciate the supporters' frustration," Hart added. "I know the role Vicario is performing. He is a great squad member, he's a true figure in the locker room but in the end you are going to be judged by your actions.
"The keeper was heavily involved in what ended up to be the decisive score."
'It's In the Game, I Can Handle It'
Thomas Frank Defended His Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario Following the Match
Italy national team Vicario is in his third campaign with Spurs.
He stated after the match that he had to take the criticism.
"That goal was a mistake of my own, I take accountability for it," he said.
"The intent was to clear the ball far and I just hit the ball in a poor manner. That made an more difficult challenge to climb."
He said receiving jeers "comes with the game".
"I'm a big man, what can I say?" he continued. "The team cannot be affected by the situation in the crowd. The fans have the right to do as they see fit.
"It's on us to stay more calm, to focus on ourselves. We are lacking in composure and poise to overturn results. This match is a poor loss and it's hard to take."
'I Was Surprised No One Returned to the Goal Line'
In spite of the keeper's mistake, it was far from an simple goal for Harry Wilson to score.
Actually it was the next longest-range Premier League score of the season β following Tyler Adams' 43.3 metre strike for the Cherries against Sunderland, which incidentally also occurred on the same day.
Wilson said he was "a little bit surprised" that he still had an open goal to aim for.
Ten seconds passed between Vicario coming out of his box and Wilson shooting β which was five moments after the kick.
"It seemed to me like the goalkeeper was out of the box for ages," he said.
"It amazed me none of the defenders went back to the line. When none of them covered the goal, my interest sparked a bit.
"[Destiny] Udogie slipped as well, which allowed me a bit of additional time. After that it was all about trying to make the correct connection and place it on target. I felt a good sense, the moment it came off my boot, that it was on the right line."
'When You're in a Bad Spell, Everything Seems to Go Against You'
Jeering Whilst We Are Still Playing Is Completely Unacceptable - Frank
While Vicario's error dominated headlines, this was an all-round poor day for Spurs to continue their home struggles.
The match was their tenth home defeat of 2025 in the league, a shared club record matching nineteen ninety-four and 2003.
They still have home games against the manager's old side the Bees and champions the Reds to come prior to the close of the season.
Only one of those wins have come since Frank took over from his predecessor in the summer.
"When you're behind 2-0 following the opening, there is a mountain to climb," said the boss.
"When you're in a bad spell, everything seems to work against you too β the opening was a redirected attempt, the next is a mistake from the keeper.
"This result leaves us in a position where we have lost another game. Each fixture has a unique narrative, this game we were defeated in the first six minutes.
"We just need to keep working. The later period was significantly improved and hopefully an aspect we can utilize to learn."
Spurs have lost four consecutive home capital clashes for the initial time in the top division.
And they are averaging nine point five attempts and 3.2 efforts on goal per game in the Premier League β their poorest rates on record in a one season (dating back to the 2003-04 season).
Ex- Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy commented that Frank has to endure the criticism.
"He's got take the stick," the pundit said. "He's taken a prestigious job at a huge football club with massive expectation. There is pressure and responsibility that comes with that.
"The performances at home have been poor and they have to improve {quickly|
