Search crews have confirmed there are "no signs of life" beneath the debris of a fallen Indonesian school where 59 individuals remain trapped.

Hundreds pupils, most of them adolescent males, were present in the two-storey Islamic boarding school in the municipality of Sidoarjo when it gave way on recently.

No fewer than five pupils were killed and around 100 injured, according to authorities.

Thirteen individuals have been rescued from the debris since rescue operations commenced, though a pair eventually succumbed in hospital.

Emergency efforts had been difficult due to the precarious condition of the facility.

On recently, rescue coordinators stated that rescuers using heat-detecting drones failed to detect signs of life from the debris.

"Recently, we even evacuated the site to ensure silence," a high-ranking officer announced during a press conference.

"We anticipated that with the employment of sophisticated equipment... we might hear some vital signs."

"According to data, no vital signs were detected."

He continued that the rescue crew had decided to advance to the "next phase" of emergency procedures - using heavy machinery to relocate pieces of cement.

These debris blocks will either be lifted using lifting equipment or divided into reduced portions.

Search personnel had not been able to undertake this action beforehand as there were apprehensions it could lead the facility to crumble more, endangering the lives of any conceivable surviving individuals.

Authorities had on the previous day stated that weeping and shouting could still be detected from below the rubble, as anxious relatives camped out at the educational facility through the night waiting for news of their family members.

Emergency management officials reported on Wednesday that 59 people were still trapped in the wreckage - though this number has fluctuated greatly over the recent period.

A senior official had beforehand commented that statistics would always be "inconsistent" in the "beginning period" of a tragedy.

The building was undergoing construction when it gave way, with two additional levels in the process of construction.

Building safety experts afterward stated that the facility's inadequate support indicated it could not bear this additional mass.

The community's local leader reports the educational institution's administration had not obtained official approvals to build extra stories to the facility.
