Giants QB Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, reacting to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.

At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered remarks following Denver's historic 33-32 victory over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership

  • Wilson joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million extension.
  • The Broncos went 4-11 in his debut year prior to Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the player from getting injured.

Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious breakup between the player and his mentor.
